Southern Avenue
Soul-Roots
Called “simply the best band in Memphis right now” by the Memphis Flyer, Southern Avenue is garnering a lot of well-deserved attention these days and very well may be Memphis’ next great musical export. Composed of guitarist Ori Naftaly, vocalist Tierinii Jackson, drummer Tikyra Jackson and bassist Daniel McKee, Southern Avenue’s sound is as diverse as their membership. While the band has deep roots in the blues, it is impossible to miss the influence of soul, rock, funk, pop, and even gospel, making them a quintessentially Memphis group.
Named after the famously shabby street that runs through South Memphis, Southern Avenue recently signed a deal with the legendary Stax imprint, a fitting home for a group that values diversity and innovation. The band is currently touring on the strength of their self-titled debut album, which was released in February of 2017.
Despite the band’s newcomer status, their sultry, raw, and soulful sound has already made them a staple on the local scene and one of the city’s must-see acts. Keep your eyes out for upcoming shows and be sure to check out their debut album.
